Thing 7a- RSS Feeds cont’d

Feeding my reader has been an interesting journey.  I have been interested in finding math sites that will keep me updated on what is going on or give me ideas and resources for the classroom.  I don’t know if it seems more difficult due to the the subject area because it does seem easier to find more material on language arts or social studies related items.  I have found myself digging and finding links.  Then I found myself in a blog that had a whole link of blogs from India related to math.  It appeared that someone had created a host of blogs as a business.    This caught my interest because it was obvious that someone was doing this as possibly a business but several were videos on Singapore Math.  I have subscribed to the Singapore Math blog since that is all the buzz as the new kid on the block.

There was also a session I attended last spring at the NCTM annual conference in Washington, DC.  The session was on the last day and not one of the larger session, but the topic was Web 2.0 and math topics.  I signed up to receive updates and have been following them over the past few months.  As I have been feeding my reader, I went to CLIME Connections to look for links and found that he was quoted in a variety of journals and articles.  I had been following the updates somewhat loosely since the spring.  The material I had heard in the conference was at a little higher level than my age group.  However, I added him to my reader because he real projects that applied to the curriculum that used technology.

His blog had an article from a gaming blog regarding the new NCTM Illuminations game Calculation Nation. The article discussed the games from a pure gaming fun, but at the same time providing an educational value.  So NCTM has put their hat in the serious gaming business.  I have logged on Calculation Nation and both my daughter and myself have played.  I want to use this with my students, but they need an email account.  Most of my students have an email account, but I don’t think all of them do.  I am going to have to make it optional activity until I figure out how to get around the email if they don’t have an account.

Here is one math resource I came across while reviewing one of the blogs I subscribe to… http://www.watchknow.com provides a compilation of over 1800 short math videos covering topics from basic operations to calculus.
